Everyone knows that protein is good for you and essential in a balanced diet, but why exactly is that? Once your stomach starts to digest the proteins, they break down into amino acids, which in turn go to repair and strengthen most of the solid matter in your body. Yes, in fact, three quarters of the stuff that’s not liquid in your body is made entirely of amino acids! Which I guess that makes sense when you take into account we’re all made of meat, but it’s not just the muscle that you find these little building blocks in, they’re also in bones, organs, and other tissues including your brain. Restoring levels of amino acids is critical, especially in the morning when you’re trying to get your brain to turn on – just stir up a protein packet and some fruit in a blender, or cook up a protein packed omelet with lots of veggies for a quick way to boost your energy and restorative processes for the day.
If you’re an especially active person, you’re going to need all the L-Carnitine, Arginine, and Glutamine that you can get, because that’s the stuff that’s going to be the most helpful in repairing tears in the muscle you get from working out, which is how you build muscle. So you might want to consider supplementing your regimen if you find you get tired and sore easily from your work outs.
Your immune system is partially supported by these little guys too, because without them your body can’t produce anti-bodies to fend off the cooties that creep in when it starts to get cold. L-Lysine is especially helpful in supporting the immune system and preventing cold sores! As winter gets closer we’re more and more tempted to pull in the carbohydrates, so make sure you’re balancing that out with good (preferably plant based) sources of complete proteins like quinoa and beans. Complete protein means that it contains all the nine essential amino acids that our bodies can’t produce on their own that we need to acquire through diet or supplementation.
Amino acids also work to replenish your supply of digestive enzymes that help break down your food and aid in the utilization of vitamins and minerals, so not only is most of your body made of it, they’re mandatory for being able to repair and grow with any of the other elements of our nutrition. Remember, you can always recognize them by the “L” in front of their name!
